The Arab-Norman Path

Welcome to Palermo

The Arab-Norman Path

Palermo, capital of "Sicily," pearl of the Mediterranean. Palermo, an Arab-Norman city of a thousand colors and diverse ethnicities, a land of art and culture, where even the street vendor, the street food vendor, and a thousand artists make history.
When we speak of the Arab-Norman style, we are referring to a truly unique style, found exclusively in Sicily, and especially in the city of Palermo. It is the fusion of two distinct cultures that ultimately collided/met in Palermo after the year 1000, when the Normans invaded Sicily and drove out the previous invaders, the Arabs. The city of Palermo was rebuilt and embellished with new buildings and churches with a Catholic influence, but with an artistic style strongly influenced by Arab culture, still present in the Sicilian capital. The result is, of course, the Arab-Norman style, recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
